Child’s Play Movies Ranked

I love to rank movies, worst to best.  If you have been following us for the past 16 months, you know we like lists.  I think this a thing, people seem to love lists.  Recently had the chance to sit and watch all of the Chucky movies within a couple of days.  Bride, Seed and Curse all in one sitting.  I remember getting to the Bride of Chucky and thinking to myself, “These movies get progressively worse.”  Well, I popped Curse of Chucky in the ole Blu Ray player and really just enjoyed this movie a bunch.  So, that led me to ranking the series.  As I said, they did get progressively worse, but Curse and Bride, while totally different, are not terrible where Seed of Chucky is a joke.  Which may have been the intentions.

I have seen the trailers for the Cult of Chucky and I am actually excited about a Chucky/Child’s Play release.  The trailers are good and I suggest checking them out.

So, let us get on with the ranking.  I bet you can guess which is the worst based off the first paragraph…Thoughts?

Seed of Chucky (2004)

For a very long time I have fallen off the Child’s Play franchise train.  It was thanks to the 1998 Bride of Chucky.  I was 18 and thought it was terrible upon its release.  When Seed of Chucky was released, well I gave it a shot.  Honestly, if it was not for the set, I may not own this movie.  After watching it again years later, it seems to poke fun of itself and honestly has some fun kills.

The story is moved forward, even if it is bizarre.  It takes the ending of Curse of Chucky or it to feel like See of Chucky helped the series or made any sense.  It did and it does, but the overall movie itself, its bad.

Bride of Chucky (1998)

The Bride of Chucky is what it is, right?  Well it is an ok movie overall, but its job was to bring Chucky back.  The story wasn’t terrible either, it played mostly as a silly slasher that, again, did not take itself too seriously.

It was fine for the most part, originally it turned me off to the series all together, but I am back and seeing it as an adult, I get it.  I get why the movie was made the way it was.  It is so dated too, remember that when you watch it again.  Slashers had gone away from the late 1980s, but Scream brought us the teen slasher and Bride plays like a teen slasher, in the same breath as Scream, in some respects.

Child’s Play 3 (1991)

Growing up I always liked playing soldier and it may have been part of the reason I liked Child’s Play.  This one had war games, jerk ass military people and hard ass barbers.  Lets not forget one of the coolest ways they brought Chucky back from the dead.  This movie moves the timeline forward as Andy is a teenager in this one.  Chucky also looks for an all new body and only torments Andy, who tries to stop Chucky.

Child’s Play 3 was the last of a dying breed.  We were in the early 1990s when the Slasher Genre was at its end.  This could be part of the reason we did not see another Chucky movie for the next seven years.  Or, it could be due to thinking 3 was the end and a trilogy for the killer doll works.

Curse of Chucky (2013)

A breathe of fresh air…Curse of Chucky is made like a real horror movie.  It put aside the humor and silliness of the films that preceded it. It has some grit and of course good death scenes and the characters are not too bad either.  There is some backstory things going on in the movie that, well I could go either way, take or leave.

Fiona Dourif, Brad Dourif’s daughter plays the lead role in the film and we actually get to see Brad in the flesh!  Overall a very good movie and it really seemed to put the Child’s Play or Chucky series is back on track and is going to lead in to Cult of Chucky, which looks good.

Child’s Play 2 (1990)

A great extension of the first movie, if you’re wondering what happens to Andy and why Chucky came back.  The beginning is confusing, but very cool.  I just don’t get why they did not get rid of the doll that caused all the problems.  That aside, it is a fun movie with some great scenes.

Dourif really got in to the Chucky spirit with this one and maybe some of the better lines.  I almost forgot about the ending, the end inside the Good Guy factory, Chucky gets messed up, it is surely the second best ending of the series.

Child’s Play (1988)

Of course the best of the series is the first.  We did not know what we were going to when the film began.  The talking doll having the little kid help him get revenge on the people that did him wrong.

Of course Child’s Play is almost a legendary film and possibly the best killer doll film, maybe not.  But it is fun from beginning of the movie to the very end.  The end is where it is, its really, really great for a horror movie or any movie, so much fun!

So, where do you rank the Child’s Play movies?  How bad is our list?  Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.
