A Quiet Place-2018
Synopsis: A family is forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.
John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place takes place in the near future, where Earth has been overrun by blind, predatory creatures, that hunt by sound. It is never really said as to where these creatures come from, but the vague references to spaceships will let your imagination lead you to believe that these creatures are in fact extraterrestrial. Also, I think I read an interview with Krasinski where he flat out said they were aliens. At any rate, the whole world is being attacked by these gnarly bastards, and A Quiet Place is a story about one family trying to survive the onslaught.
Beautifully shot in upstate New York, A Quiet Place begins, and ends with the story of Lee, and Evelyn Abbot, and their 3 children. Real life husband, and wife John Krasinksi, and Emily Blunt play the leads. Millicent Simmonds, plays their deaf daughter Reagan. Noah Jupe, and Cade Woodward play their two sons Marcus, and Beau. A Quiet Place subtly explains its plot points through news paper clippings, and the silent family’s journey through an abandoned town, as they scavenge for food in a near dystopia. As we learn more about the ways the family has survived this alien apocalypse, we also find out that there are 3 creatures living in their area. Everything they do to survive is predicated on the fact that they mustn’t make a loud noise. The creatures are blind, and only hunt by sound. As you can imagine, this makes life extremely difficult when you have 3 children all under the age of 13. Because of this, the Abbott family, and a handful of other families in the area are constantly under attack, and living in fear.
I will make this review brisk, and left to your imagination, just like the movie itself. I don’t want to give away much more than I’ve already told you. I will say that A Quiet Place is hands down the best horror movie I have seen so far in 2018. 48 hours after my viewing, and Im still buzzing about. The acting from everyone is superb. Millicent Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, was a marvel. Emily Blunt, and John Krasinski are very believable as loving parents trying to save their children from the impending doom that lurks beyond their doorway. Krasinski as a director and writer is amazing as well, and I look forward to his future projects. His homage to horror classics like Alien, and Aliens are obvious, but very welcome to a guy like me. He built suspense, and terror as the 2nd, and 3rd act developed, and got the very best performance out of his talent on set. Big Kudos to Jim on this one.
The special effects were on point for a movie with a seemingly smaller budget. The tiny bit of dialogue, the brisk pacing, and vague story telling left a lot to the imagination, and was a breath of fresh air for the genre. There’s a lot to be debated about A Quiet Place, but one thing I will not debate is the quality of this film. It is excellent. Do yourself a favor, and go see it as soon as possible.
I rate A Quiet Place 8.5 out of 10 stars.
