DISCLAIMER: The Horror Syndicate has no affiliation with Shudder, we support the streaming app as horror fans only. We make zero dollars by supporting the horror app. This article is written out of pure happiness with Shudder and is no way influenced by the team at Shudder…because we don’t know them.
In an age where everyone is streaming and stealing movies from the internet. It gets really depressing and sad for physical collectors, and makes many of us feel like our days are numbered. There is an app, that is doing it the right way, a subscription app, for only $4.99 a month, Shudder.
What is Shudder?
A Streaming Service For Thrill Seekers. Huge Catalog Of Edgy Films Online. Try It Free! Try Shudder On All Your Favorite Devices Today. Learn More! Try It Free. Watch Full Episodes. No Hidden Costs. Watch Anytime Anywhere. Cancel Anytime. Download The App. Brands: iPhone, iPad, Chromecast, Xbox One, Roku. Shudder is now owned and operated by AMC Networks.
So, yeah Shudder is legit. While it is still missing an opportunity with the folks using the PS4, Shudder is getting big and fast. There are so many titles currently streaming. Not just horror movies, but shows, documentaries, original series and now original content only on Shudder, like docs and podcasts.
But, there are plenty of people not sold and the average, basic horror fans bitch and moan that Shudder doesn’t have anything on the app. Which means, Shudder doesn’t have all the main stream, newer movies, nor Freddy or Jason. But, that is not what horror is all about. Horror goes beyond the Conjuring, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Chucky. For those who think that is what you need to make it a good horror streaming service, grow up and explore the world of horror for real.
I currently have nearly 600, possibly over 600 different horror movies in my personal collection, that is all physical media, not streaming. If I own anything streaming, chances are, I own the physical copy as well. The Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street movies account for 3% of my collection, which means I have around 580 different horror movies that are not Freddy or Jason. So that right there tells me there is so much more to check out.
Here are the reasons to check out Shudder. If you have a PS4 and are waiting for the app, sorry. It may be time to write Sony, it is not Shudder that is the problem, which you can read here.
Joe Bob Briggs The Last Drive-in
Now, this is not for everyone, but those who grew up with Joe Bob on TNT Monstervision or wherever he was hosting a horror show, will love this. I was not one of those, I always mention “USA Up All-Night”. With its rebirth last summer, we have now 3 different features with Joe Bob. The Last Drive-In feature 13 movies, all hosted by Joe Bob. Movies like, Hellraiser, Re-animator, Demons, The Prowler, Sleepaway Camp, Sorority Babes at the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Rabid, Basket Case and more. Then the Dinners of Death features The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Hills Have Eyes. Then finally a Very Joe Bob Christmas which show Phantasm, Phantasm III, Phantasm IV and Phantasm Ravenger. Coming March 29, Joe Bob will be hosting a limited run of double features. These are streamed live and then you can find them later on the Shudder app…only on the Shudder app. Unless you’re an asshole and you steal.
Most of the movies he has shown are classics or musts for any horror fan. Plus Joe Bob chimes in with some trivia about movies and the actors in the films.
There is a slew of Italian horror films on Shudder. Now, I know these are not everyone’s cup o tea or whatever. But, they are worth a watch. Movies from Lucio Fulci are present, like Zombie, City of the Living Dead and The Beyond. Then there are a couple of the cannibal movies, which are a must, Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox and for those brave enough, Emmauelle and the Last Cannibals. If you act fast, Burial Ground and Zombie Holocaust. Those are all for the gore hound. Oh and Demons and Demons 2.
But, the for the Giallo fan, which if you’re not sure what Giallo is, it is a thriller, mystery type, made famous by Dario Argento and other Italian directors. Classica like Deep Red, Phenomena, Tenebra, Don’t Torture the Duckling, Stage Fright and Blood and Black Lace. So many choices of Italian horror it is silly to not give them a shot. My personal favorite Argento, Inferno streams on Shudder.
Shudder now has a couple of docs from AMC, like Eli Roth’s History of Horror, it is a must. 7-part doc series that really goes though the sub-genres of horror and the names we all know. It was on AMC in October 2018, but now it has a home with Shudder and is an absolute must for horror fans. But beyond that. The doc, Horror Noire is wonderful and only on Shudder. There is a Wolf Creek series, Mayhem, Born to Kill, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and many more. The talk show, the Core, which needs a new season is another must only on Shudder. Mandy, one of the top films in horror in 2018 is there as well, let’s not forget the much talked about Summer of ’84.
For the basic horror fan, Halloween, Halloween 4 The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5 the Revenge of Michael Myers are all streaming on Shudder. Along with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Re-Animator and a couple of must see docs of the big 3, Never Sleep Again and Crystal Lake memories are there too.
A SyFy show that is really underrated. It is a creepypasta based anthology show, where each season is different. Each season is full of dread and they stick with you. Talk about binge worthy content. Season 1 alone is worth admission. It is so creepy and a well laid out story. Easy season is so much different and definitely worth a watch.
I think that is enough…I mean, what else could you want for something that is less than a fucking value meal at McDonalds per month? Shudder is something every hardcore horror fan should have. There is so much content, more comes monthly. I don’t think I have even grazed the edge of Shudder and I have been on since July 2018. For those who stream Netflix, Hulu and Prime, Shudder makes sense. Just head over to Shudder.com and start your 7-day free trail…Oh yeah, you can try Shudder for free! So what in the hell is holding you back? Check out Shudder now!
