Alien vs Predator – Ranking Every Alien and Predator Film

It seemed these two would be destined to be intertwined after 1987’s Predator and 1986’s Aliens were released.  Both action films with horror elements or, depending on how you look at it, both horror films with action elements.  Regardless, the franchises have been around a long time now, 1979 for Alien and 1987 for Predator.  While we’ve never ranked each induvial franchise, we have decided you, the reader, the follower and subscriber will have a hand in the ranking.  As you may know, we have been doing 5-star ratings on our Facebook page and we have some results.  Really this exercise is to get us the Top 500 horror films of all-time.  But, with these ratings, we can rank anything based on your scores.

I won’t spend too much time here, but I will tell you, There are six Alien films, including Prometheus and there are five Predator films, including Prey and of course, Alien vs Predator and AVP Requiem.  The latest film, Prey was released on Hulu in 2022 and most of these are available on various streaming platforms.

I’ll add the overall score for each film, that way you can see ow they’re ranked and why each movie is ranked where it is.  I will say, you guys really loved a couple of these are are extremely generous to a few others.  I will also comment on each film, with my personal thoughts.

Let’s DO THIS!

13. The Predator (2018) 44%

I think I agree with this ranking.  The Predator was a movie most of us looked forward to, but it just didn’t deliver.  I hope we get a better film in the near future.  Prey did kind of wash the bad taste out of our mouths, but I wanna see something more current.

12. Alien vs Predator Requiem (2007) 52%

In all honesty, I had fun with this.  It is no doubt a bad movie overall, but some redeemable qualities.  If we are ever to get about AVP movie, set it off world, like Predators.  I think that would be awesome.  But, this was the worst for most until The Predator.

11. Alien Covenant (2017) 60%

This is what we are left with until next August when Fede Alvarez’s film is release.  I cannot comment, I still have not watched this one.  I am not a big fan of the Alien films overall.  I like them enough, but Prometheus kind of left me sour.

10. Alien Resurrection (1997) 67%

There was a level of excitement with the release of Resurrection.  But, it went in a very odd direction and just couldn’t let go of the Ripley character, when the franchise could use new blood.  It’s not great, not fun and not one I visit very often.

9.  Alien vs Predator (2004) 70%

I wanted this movie to be so good, so bad.  It was just ok.  Some cool ideas, poor execution.  Why not borrow from the comics?  I don’t get that, are screen writers and studios that arrogant?  Anyone, just another link in the chain.  It was nice to see Aliens and Predators go head to head in live action and there are some cool things in this film.

8. Alien 3 (1992) 74%

I saw this at the drive in with Batman Returns.  It was the very first Alien movie I had ever seen and I wasn’t impressed.  Fast forward to 1997, it is a masterpiece.  It took me until 2004 or 2005 to see Aliens.  Yeah, I was never a big fan.  Once I saw Aliens, this movie was a let down knowing they killed off Hicks and Newt.  But, I am not as attached to Aliens as everyone else.  Over time, Alien 3 grew on me and it is the most horror of the entire series after the 1979 film.

7. Prometheus (2012) 74%

What a snoozed fest.  It may be too long.  It is visually stunning and there is much substance, but it lost my interest. I do plan a re-watch at some point.  But do I really want to?  I was surprised to see this rated so highly.

6. Predators (2010) 80%

This movie surprised the hell out of me.  I turned it on HBO or something and didn’t see the title and it was just gripping.  So interesting, the best human element since Predator 2, which isn’t saying much, since this is only the third movie.  Damn good movie.

5. Predator 2 (1990) 87%

I wish I could say this one is underrated.  But you give it an 87%, I’d say that is high praise.  It is good and so different from the first Predator and yet the same. It was cool to see a more urban, city environment.  I wish this would have done better, we lost 14 years before Predator became relevant again and 20 years before a third film.

Check out Sequel Seth’s article on why Predator 2 is so damn good!

4. Prey (2022) 90%

Blown away, this was the first like the first Predator movie in many ways. It was so cool and so savage. It was not what I expected at all.  Hulu has it streaming and I wish they’d release a physical copy for us collectors.  Check it out!

3. Alien (1979) 97%

The absolute scariest film of this bunch.  Pure horror, a monster hunting and killing people on a claustrophobic setting and it is dark.  A great way to end a tremendous decade of horror.  In my mind, this is the best Alien franchise film.  It is logically the only horror film of the bunch.

2. Predator (1987) 98%

This was always simply an action film.  I never, ever looked at it as a horror film.  Listening to others talk about it, I can see where it can be looked at as a horror film.  I personally go back and fourth.  These two franchises barely fit horror in my opinion, but here we are.  I love Predator and it is a great film, tons of fun and Arnold.

1. Aliens (1986) 98%

This one was always a hard sell for me for some reason.  So many people love Aliens and I see why.  Kick ass action movie, humans versus Aliens.  That is exactly what this movie is, kick ass.  We get Ripley back and a band of new very cool and quotable characters.  Aliens is super fun and unfortantley, it is barely a horror movie.  But, that is a debate no one will ever will, ever.  Is it horror, is it not horror, who cares.  It kicks ass and has three elements that make a cool movie, 1. Action 2. Sci fi 3. Horror.  Aliens is an awesome movie.

I have been watching horror films since I was 6 years old. The story, one Saturday night, my mom and I were watching movies and she fell asleep on the couch. We had the channel set on HBO and the movie we were watching ended and the next one, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge. This was some time in 1986. I watched then entire film, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. When my mom woke, she asked me what just ended and I told her, “Freddy”. That was all I talked about for weeks and finally she broke down and rented more horror films for me. She rented, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2, Re-Animator, Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives and Halloween II.
