Review: Deathgasm (2015)

Let me start off by saying, Deathgasm is an amazing title for a horror flick. Brings to mind, something from the hit show Metalocalypse. I saw the trailer for this months ago. Being an avid Heavy Metal fan, it immediately piqued my interest. I mean come on, A Heavy Metal Horror Comedy?!?!? What’s not to like? But for some damn reason, I never pulled the trigger to buy it. As luck would have it, I received a copy on Blu Ray in my monthly subscription of Horror Block. The rest as they say, is history.

Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) moves in with his Aunt and Uncle. Devout Christians, they look at Brodie’s taste in music as “Devil Music”. New to town, he befriends Zakk played by James Blake. They really only have one thing in common, METAL. So of course, they decide to form a band. They dub themselves Deathgasm. During a bit of juvenile delinquency, they come in possession of a string of musical notes called the Black Hymn. After playing said notes, they unwittingly unleash a demonic force that will stop at nothing to conquer the world. Not the greatest premise, but serves well enough.death3

With genre hybrid films like this, to me it is really hard to find the ‘perfect’ formula for blending horror with comedy. They run the risk of being too funny or not funny enough, which can hinder the horror aspect of the film. Even though the characters weren’t very likeable, the actors did well at not trying too hard to be funny. The jokes and gags (pun intended) were very entertaining.

The gore effects were pretty damn well done for a low budget affair from New Zealand. That’s right- from the land of Braindead (Dead Alive) and Bad Taste. Some of the effects brought to mind the former as well as The Evil Dead series here in the states. There were a few pretty horrific and original kills in this one.

As a metal fan, the soundtrack was as to be expected, HEAVY. But, as metal fan I also realize that this film is not for everyone. People who don’t appreciate metal music may not care for this film, which can narrow down its fan base. This is not a great film by any means. It is a fun film. I actually loved it.

Only time will tell if this film has the staying power to achieve cult status. I believe it does…

Hey there boils and ghouls! My love of horror films came on a dark and stormy night.... ....Truthfully, it probably happened in 1980-something during a sunny day when I was 5 or 6. That movie was JAWS. I had never been so terrified to go swimming and I live in a land-locked state! I have been a Horror Hound ever since. Having seen hundreds of films, some good and some downright dreadful, my love for horror cinema has grown stronger than ever! My wife Beth and I consume all types of horror films. One of our mutual favorites is A Serbian Film (2010). A couple of my favorite directors are Lucio Fulci and John Carpenter. Contributing here at T.H.S and being able to work with these other folks is an indescribable honor to me. I love our T.H.S team.... I will share secrets after a few drinks and I also enjoy long romantic walks in dimly-lit cemeteries. My fave top 5 films are: 1)Dawn Of The Dead (Original) 2)The Thing (Carpenter's Remake) 3)Zombie 4)The Beyond 5)Friday the 13th pt IV: The Final Chapter Stay Scared! -ZombiSurvivor
