Back in 2019, I did a list of my Top 25 Italian Horror films. It is very different, well there are 25 more movie and a bunch of weird movies. I know this will stir up problems, but I do not like Cannibal Holocaust at all. Not because of its graphic nature, I just don’t think it is as great or revered as some people say it is. I guess I just prefer movies like Cannibal Ferox or Eaten Alive. I think these are less about shock value and more about, oddly, story telling and gore. In Cannibal Holocaust, I just absolutely hated the film crew and honestly, happy they got what they got.
Looking at the list, you’ll notice Fulci movies are littered throughout the list, I love Fulci and this is my personal list, personal favorites. But there are so many great movies listed below. I also feel, I am just hitting the tip of the iceberg. In total, i have now seen 56 Italian horror films and the bottom few didn’t sit well with me, but as the list goes on, the titles get better and better. Usually this list would have a bunch of images from each movie. But, I decided to just drop the list in there and make it a list. You will either check these movie out, or you wont. So many of these are currently streaming on Prime Video, Shudder and Tubi. When going in to watching Italian horror, you have to remember, there is dubbing and usually a good amount of gore and creative kills. Some of these are simply ridiculous, but ultimately great horror fun. If you’re a main streamer or a horror snob, leave. This isn’t for you. Italian horror is an acquired taste and not for everyone.
Thanks to anyone who reads this article and I hope you got something out of this. It sometimes takes an open mind to look pass Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees.
