Bloody Streaming Roulette: Baskin (2015)

Well boils and ghouls, it’s that time of the week again!  Your old pal ZombiSurvivor is back for another horrific game of chance. I truly hope you all enjoy my Bloody Streaming Roulette as much as I enjoy spilling this horror movie bile all over my keyboard. Last week, I conquered the Danish zombie flick What We Become (2014) and came out victorious! Although nothing spectacular, it was a decent entry into the sub-genre.

This week, I feel my winning mojo continuing. So, looking to bottle strikes of lightening twice, I am sure glad I landed on another film from overseas. Foreign films are a mixed bag. You almost always have to read subtitles and sometimes that can distract the viewer from what’s happening on screen. So, let us continue my efforts to help you all steer clear of the cinematic bullshit that seems prevalent on all of our streaming companies’ libraries.

So spin that shit!

What flick did I land on this week?

Baskin (2015)

Baskin follows a group of five police officers, all ranging from fresh out of the academy to one foot in the grave, pun most definitely intended. The men follow up and respond to a strange emergency call to the outskirts of town, where the local dredges and flotsam and jetsam reside. Urban legends and strange stories surround this area. Creating uneasiness with the officers. Their journey takes them to an old abandoned police station. Inside, the fellow officers stumble into what appears to be a satanic black mass. Depicting some of the most horrific sights I have had the pleasure of witnessing.baskin3

This film is truly a wild ride. It starts off slow and ominous in the first act, only to slam you in the gut sending all air out of your bewildered body. This film is not for the faint of heart. Bizarre, ghastly imagery and horrific scenes bring to mind the worst haunted house you can possibly think up in your nightmares. This film will make you want to stop watching at times. But like any car or train wreck, you always have to keep watching. This film is surprisingly artistic. Stylish cinematography. Themes of life, death, heaven and of course hell. Lastly, this film is just fucking nuts!

The movie does have its faults too. One glaring issue to me, was the plot. I just felt the entire time that I was missing something in the storyline. Like many foreign films, things or ideas sometimes can get lost in translation. So maybe that’s it. Or maybe it’s the fact that I am not well versed in Turkish culture, their superstitions or beliefs. Either way to me, this is a small negative as it does not adversely affect the end product.

The country of Turkey isn’t necessarily known as a hot bed for the Horror genre. But I really hope that this fresh entry may inspire the country’s filmmakers  to dive even deeper into the world of the macabre. Baskin is a wonderful example of what can linger in the darkest corners of the mind or HELL.  So kiddies, if you are in the mood for some sadistic horror or just feel like getting creeped the fuck out any time soon, check out Baskin! Be sure and tell them ZombiSurvivor showed you the way!

Hey there boils and ghouls! My love of horror films came on a dark and stormy night.... ....Truthfully, it probably happened in 1980-something during a sunny day when I was 5 or 6. That movie was JAWS. I had never been so terrified to go swimming and I live in a land-locked state! I have been a Horror Hound ever since. Having seen hundreds of films, some good and some downright dreadful, my love for horror cinema has grown stronger than ever! My wife Beth and I consume all types of horror films. One of our mutual favorites is A Serbian Film (2010). A couple of my favorite directors are Lucio Fulci and John Carpenter. Contributing here at T.H.S and being able to work with these other folks is an indescribable honor to me. I love our T.H.S team.... I will share secrets after a few drinks and I also enjoy long romantic walks in dimly-lit cemeteries. My fave top 5 films are: 1)Dawn Of The Dead (Original) 2)The Thing (Carpenter's Remake) 3)Zombie 4)The Beyond 5)Friday the 13th pt IV: The Final Chapter Stay Scared! -ZombiSurvivor
