I hope you all have been enjoying our ABCs of Horror daily segment this month. It really has been a lot of fun for sure. As some of you may know, this past week The Horror Syndicate unleashed its podcast premiere upon the horror masses. If you would like to check it out, you can find it here. During the podcast, we covered and discussed many topics, including dusting off the Bloody Streaming Roulette segment. So as October comes to a close, my weekly game of chance will LIVE AGAIN! What better time than now?!?!?
So let’s play some Bloody Streaming Roulette!
What shall it be?
Dark Was The Night (2014)
Our next game of chance follows a small town sheriff (Kevin Durand, TV’s The Strain), as he tries to put his life back together and put his past behind him. But something sinister has awoken in the surrounding forest outside of Maiden Woods. Animals and family pets start missing. Soon random claw marks and large footprints riddle the snowy streets downtown. With only the help of his deputy (Lukas Haas), Sheriff Shields looks to keep his family together and protect the town from this dreaded shadowy figure. Will they prevail? Or is the town of Maiden Woods doomed?
Full Disclosure…
I feel asleep at about the one hour mark, the first time attempting to watch this. Dreadfully slow. Almost felt like I was watching a horror film on the Lifetime channel. Nothing really happened for the first 75 minutes of a 90 minute long movie. The script fleshed out the characters quite a bit. But not necessarily in a good way. Their story was in the fore front so much, that I wasn’t sure what the biggest threat was. The murderous creature or their acidic marriage. Either way, both were anti climatic. So for a creature feature such as this, the extra effort of character development was probably unnecessary.
Now onto the “creature”. We only see said “creature” on screen for a maximum of 27 seconds, gave or take one second. I’m serious… Had the film, I don’t know, actually shown the creature more throughout. I think the fear factor would have been much higher. But as it was, we’re pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel on that aspect. Even the interesting ending could not add to this underwhelming affair.
Had high hopes for this.
Time to see what the roulette wheel has to say about Dark Was The Night…
There you have it. We have a loser folks… Stay tuned next week to see if we can get back on a winning streak.
