Well boils and ghouls, it’s that time of the week again. I will test my luck on a chance bet. If you’ve been following along with me at home, you know the game. Last week’s installment, Re-Kill (2015) was a fairly original and well done zombie flick and to my surprise, was a winner. I know my luck can’t continue on a week to week basis, but as long as I can keep some of you away from those dreadful horror titles, I would consider it a small victory. I will sit through the genre bullshit so you may not have to.
So where will the roulette ball settle this time?
The next victim is…..
Stung (2015)
Stung. Wow… Okay, I’ve seen it pop up on my queue numerous times before. I never wanted to pull the trigger on it and watch, for a few reasons. First of all, the initial signs all point to, ‘ahhh fucking hell no’. Secondly, the synopsis and picture of the film reminded me of a bad SyFy film, ala Sharktopus. But the film follows a catering business as they serve a debutant party at a family mansion in the middle of nowhere. Through a miracle in composting and agriculture, mutated and deadly wasps have manifested and begin to wreak havoc on the well-to-do’s. Once stung, the host incubates an entirely new wasp. The wasps then break out of the hosts and become enormous in size.
Can this party have a happy ending at the end of the night?
Stung is so much more than your casual monster movie. Young millennial horror fans may not get this reference, but had this movie been filmed and released in the 1990’s, I have a feeling it would’ve been prominently featured on Joe Bob Briggs’ MonsterVision on TNT, or USA’s ‘Up All Night’. It’s funny. But not too funny. The special effects were very good for a lower budget affair. The bugs, some of which were practically made, were great. The young actors did a really good job, being tense and scared. Leading the youngsters with a genre cameo, was Lance Henriksen who did his thing very well, as he always does. Any horror film feels like a classic, when Henrikson is involved.
Just saying…
The film isn’t anything spectacular. You don’t have to put much thought into this one, just sit back, crack a brew and enjoy. This gory, nasty and gooey little diddy worked me over. It was truly a delight!
All-in-all, we have another winner folks. Stung is a wonderful midnight monster movie, that is charming yet quite deadly. Sure it has corny dialogue at points, but most of my favorite horror films do too. I’m not trying to say this is a favorite. But this film surely, is re-watchable. And even better than that, it’s FUN.
I’m feeling lucky tonight!
IMDB: 5.0/10 (way too low)
