We are going to try something new here at the Horror Syndicate. Turns out, we love music as well as horror movies. From the scores to a film and if it has a soundtrack, we seem to love that too.
So for the first post, I am going to add some songs, via Youtube. These are all soundtrack songs from different horror movies from the 1980s and 1990s. In the early 1980s, music videos became a big deal and shortly we would get music videos that would help promote different films. We would see the actual music video with scenes from the film mixed in. This was great for marketing, I, a child of the 80s fell for it every time.
So that is what this post is about, horror music videos. This is a list of a few songs that made its way to MTV to promote a film. The mid-1980s, this happened a ton.

Goo Goo Dolls – “I’m Awake Now”
Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
I bought “Steel Blades” the Freddy’s Dead soundtrack in 1991. It heavily featured the Goo Goo Dolls. This was before they hit it bit with other songs for other movies. I like this one, it is the opening track from Freddy’s Dead.
Alice Cooper – “He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)”
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
This song was written for Jason Lives and it appears in the film in the credits. It is a great “love song” for Jason and pays tribute to the entire Friday the 13th Franchise. Bryan, aka the Horror Jew, brilliantly used this song in our promotion for our very special Friday the 13th Podcast.
Motorhead – “Hellraiser”
Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
FUCK YES! Lemmy and Pinhead, a match made in…hell? Kick ass song, for an underrated edition to the Hellraiser series. I love this song and the video is rockin!
Dokken – “Dream Warriors”
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Best song on the list? You better believe it! I never cared about Dokken until I saw this video when I was 6 years old. This was my trailer back then. I loved it so much Dream Warriors has stuck with me to this day. So much, my kids love this song, yeah I listen to it often. They listen and sing along. “We’re the DREAM WARRIORS!”
Creed – “What if”
Scream 3 (2000)
This may be the latest song that is connected to a horror film with scenes from the film, or whatever this is. I like this song, I am sure it was not written for Scream 3, but added to the soundtrack. In the late 1990s, there were some rocking soundtracks where the songs had nothing to do with the movie in question. The Spawn movie soundtrack and the Crow: City of Angels had amazing soundtracks, oh and Queen of the Damned.
J. Geils Band – “Fright Night”
Fright Night (1985)
I never, ever knew this existed until now, it is insane. Fright Night is such a good vampire flick that falls right in the middle of this time where music videos were used to promote movies.
The Ramones – “Pet Sematary”
Pet Sematary (1989)
How can you not get excited hearing this song. I mean, I heard the song before even knowing the movie or the book for that matter. The Ramones, to me did a perfect job preforming a song for the film. This is one of my favorites.
Bush – “Mouth”
An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)
Bush…Mouth, this is actually a remix of the song, but I love the tone it puts out. The movie itself is not good at all. But the song Mouth and the video took me to the theater to see it. Not to mention, An American Werewolf in London is arguably the best werewolf movie ever.
Vinnie Vincent Invasion – “Love Kills”
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master (1988)
Lesser known that Dream Warriors, this song can only be heard at The Crave Inn, in the background as Rick comes in to get Alice and Dan flags him down. I actually love the song and the video is so Gothic and presents the film well.
AC/DC – “Who Made Who?”
Maximum Overdive (1986)
I hate to say this, but AC/DC made a ton of great music, and this is actually a very good song. But everyone will know it for being a part of Maxumum Overdrive. Not a terrible horror movie, a lot of fun. Song is very good.
