The Horror Syndicate has been around for over six years. I realize in the life of the internet that isn’t very long. But over the course of those years, especially early, I wrote nearly six hundred articles. I’ve done reviews, lists and press releases. Also a few projects that were just pure passion for Italian horror.
But the last two years we have been focused on building the YouTube channel and growing an audience for our weekly show, The Horror Syndicate Discourse. It has taken the place of writing articles. But I have this nagging feeling that something is missing and here I am, back on the site for a list. Yeah and this will be then first of many.
In 2019 I kept track of every single horror film I watched and had a goal of 500 different horror movies in one calender year. I began the year with The New York Ripper (1982) and ended with Terror Train (1980) on New Year’s Eve. I ended with 522 different horror films viewed in 2019. That is seems excessive or too little. But I was then a single father, with a job and a budding comic book writing career. Not to mention, horror isn’t everything to me.
Since 2019 I’ve kept track of horror movies, listing the films I’d seen in each year, no duplicates, I would watch the same film multiple times but not list the second viewing. 2020 I finished with 187, but I blame the hangover of 2019’s 522. 2021 I ended up with 307 and 2022, as of this writing I am at 145 and I have a goal of 250. The best part is adding new movies to the list. This brings me to another list…
With all the films I’d been watching, I just needed to know how many horror films. I have seem, so I started a new list and as of today I have seen 824. I know there are a few missing from this list as it is a work in progress. But I was blown away by that number. Also, it will be 825 Friday after I see Jordan Peele’s Nope.
The list begins with Nosferatu (1922) and the latest film I’ve seen is X (2022). That is 100 years of horror. That is an average of 8 films per year. So…it is time to make a ton of lists! Yeah, I can’t do one for every year. The 1920s consists of one movie. I’ve only seen ten films from the 1930s, 6 from the 1940s, 13 from the 1950s, 21 from the 1960s and it continues to escalate. Just wait until the 80s, there are a few years between 1980 and 2021 that have fifteen or twenty movies.
It’s gonna be odd, I’m likely to do a Top 10 of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s and then a top 20 of the 1960s. But once I hit the 70s and absolutely the 1980s, I may do lists per year. Yeah it may get a little wild and will be a lot work, but I think I’m game. I’m 100% game for bringing more traffic to the website and hopefully we can find more subscribers for YouTube to tune in to our live show.
I want to apologize for you loyal THS readers. The lack of content is 100% on my shoulders and I’d love to promise to make it up to you, but who knows what will happen. I know I am making some lists that will eventually culminate in my personal Top 50 favorite Horrror films of all-time.
Thanks for being a part of THS and there is more to come!
