Rayzor did a review of the Thing’s prequel two years ago. But here is my take.
Let me just put this out there, this review will, most likely, not do this film justice. Not because this was such a great movie, because it wasn’t. No, it won’t do this film justice because this film has a lot of interesting trivia, and I am kind of rushing this review to get it out.
Here is the quick break down (No spoilers at this point), The main character Kate is brought onto a research team after they discover some alien object in Antarctica, under the ice. After finding and removing a life form that had been frozen within the ice, all hell breaks loose. Sorry, that is about it, at least without going into detail.
There isn’t much to say about the newest addition to The Thing series. This movie is a prequel to the more popular John Carpenter’s The Thing, which was inspired by The Thing From Another Planet. I didn’t find any of the acting particularly bad, but at the same time it felt a bit uninspired, in fact that is a good way to describe the entire movie, the alien was well done, but was in no way better than JC’s The Thing, sometimes the CGI was a bit obvious, but not enough to ruin a scene. A I was not really clear on Kate’s relationship with the character named Adam, they seemed to have a thing going on, but it is so subtle that it really has no point. I could go on about this kind of thing in the movie, but I don’t want to be completely down about it. The fact is that this movie is descent for someone this is in the mood for a light horror movie, or what I call popcorn horror movies. It is enjoyable enough, to grab a bowl of popcorn and sit and watch, but after the credits roll, you have as many feelings about the movie as you feel about your empty popcorn bowl.
I would love to go more into the plot, but there just isn’t much to go into, there might be some parts that surprise someone who has never seen JC’s The Thing, but I am just not sure. I do think that it might be worth watching this one and then JC’s, but that might just take away some of the surprise in JC’s The Thing. A Which, for those of you that may not know, many horror fans consider John Carpenter’s The Thing one of the best horror films of all time. I would have to agree, maybe not the best, but it is up there.

1. I would put my hood on in Antarctica! I understand that the director wants us to see the pretty faces of the actors and actresses, but come on. I have lived in some cold climates, and you don’t walk outside and leave your hood down, face exposed, and also leave the door open when you get distracted.
2. When you think that anyone around you might be an alien, and they point across the room and say, “The keys are over there.” but then makes no motion to join you in the search. RED FLAG, they are waiting for you to look in the drawer, so they can eat your head. (Really, this applies to just about any situation. There is a reason they don’t want to go over there.)
3. To all you silly aliens out there, just like I mentioned to the humans. If you are planning to get into your intergalactic ride, and get the hell out of dodge. Take a few seconds, and close the entry hatch. Why would you leave it open anyway? Were you born in a barn? … … … I guess you could have been, huh?
