Krampus was a delight to watch. It captures the Christmas holiday spirit perfectly and then throws a curve ball at the audience. An old legend is told, one I had never heard of, the legend of Krampus. It seems Krampus is the anit-Santa Claus.
Krampus is a fun movie and centers around a family getting together for the holiday. There is a lot of hostility within the entire family and Max the boy who lives in the house makes a wish. This is a “careful what you wish for” type of movie. The entire family loses their Christmas Spirit, especially Max, who rips up his letter to Santa and throws it to the wind after being teased by his cousins.
The setting is fantastic, it seems to be a small town in the middle of huge snow storm, black out type of snow storm. It looks dark in the middle of the day. Krampus has little minions, not all little that help him out, like little Gingerbread men. Krampus is horror to its core, but there is a lot of good humor to keep everything light. Krampus is fun for the family, I know this after watching with my wife and kids. The scares and creatures are not haunting and neither is the Krampus itself, but scary enough to shock the children.
If I could just add a comment from my son, “This movie rocked, I hope the Krampus never comes for me!”
The ending of the movie is really perfect as it kind of messes with your emotions. The ending wraps up the entire movie in a little bow, or you know maybe a snow globe. Hopefully that joke will land.
I think Krampus is going to eventually go down as one of the great horror Christmas movies. The beginning shows off what Black Friday looks like and then traps itself into a family Christmas movie with a wicked twist. I think everyone should see Krampus and hell, just buy the movie and show it to their kids to show them what happens when they are turds the Krampus is coming. The anti-Santa, that is something missing from my childhood. If you’re not a good girl or boy this year, Krampus comes for you, also, be careful what you wish for.
I think Michael Dougherty knows how to make a holiday horror movie. Trick’r Treat is fantastic and we are going see a sequel. I would love to see a really cool and interesting Thanksgiving horror movie.
