We are not far from the sequel to the Conjuring. For me, it was time to break out the Blu Ray and give it another watch. The first time I watched it, I loved the movie. It was such a…on the point horror movie, ghost story. To this point, there had been many to try and some succeed. The Conjuring was one the worked.
A lot of people told me it was great and I needed to see it, but never had the chance. I watched this film with my wife and she was creeped out completely, which is hard to do, unless werewolves are involved. I had to hold it together, but I will say this film will be on the 2016 Top 100 Horror film list, well I hope to see it on the list anyway. I love a good ghost story or a film about a haunting. The last 15 or 20 years or more there have been multiple attempts and most have failed in my eyes. Darkness, Boogeyman, Haunting in Connecticut and The Messengers all looked good in the trailers, but did not deliver, in story and scares.
The film takes place in 1971 and begins with Ed and Loraine Warren, yes if you have heard the names, they are real people who investigated the Amityville house the same year. Roger and Carolyn Perron move into a dilapidated farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island with their five daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April. During the first day, their move goes smoothly, though their dog Sadie refuses to enter the house. Later, one of the daughters finds a boarded up entrance to a cellar. While they move in the house girls play this clapping game. Eventually the mom and the youngest were left home alone when the spirits in the house decide to play along. It is creepy, then the spirit seems to attack the mother, she has bruising on her body. After, things happen to some of the other girls and the family is scared. There are some creepy moments within the first few days in the house.
The mom approaches the Warrens after sitting in on one of their lectures. The Warrens agree to help, the find out about the land and who lived there and why it would be haunted. They do an investigation, which looks like it was filmed back in the 1970s. I do not want to go into details but they wanted to get an exorcism from the church. So they documented the disturbances and that is when everything comes to a head.
This film is great, I loved it and have added it to my collection. The sequel will be released June 10, 2016 and based on the ending it sounded like it could be a take on the house at 112 Ocean Ave, in Amityville, New York. I would like to see what they do with the sequel as it is based on the Enfield Poltergeist in England. James Wan is back to direct and he is the right man for the job. He has made a bunch of horror movies, Saw, Insidious and its sequel.
I am sure some of the story may be true in the Conjuring but it was made to be entertaining. The film Haunting in Connecticut is also another one of the Warrens cases, but the film version was not handled well. James Wan directed this film and he is really becoming a great horror director if you ask me. He wrote and directed Saw and Dead Silence and directed Insidious and Insidious Chapter 2 as I said before. So yeah he is doing well, not to mention two of his horror films released in the same year made 128 millions dollars and the other 312 millions dollars, that’s big money for horror. See the Conjuring, see Insidious, see Saw, oh and that spawned like 6 sequels. Also, see the spin-off movie, Annabelle. It is not as “scary”, but not bad overall and the story differs from what we see in the Conjuring.
IMDB.com rates the Conjuring at 7.5 and I give it a 8.6, it was good.
