Werewolves are my passion.
As a child, the first Werewolf movie I was exposed to was ‘Silver Bullet’, which my parents had owned on VHS. That movie scared me and made me laugh at the same time, and I watched it often. But my obsession with Werewolf fiction didn’t really hit until I was in my early teens when I finally watched ‘An American Werewolf in London’, and from there it really took off. I sought out many Werewolf films afterward, including ‘An American Werewolf in Paris’, which is inferior to Landis’s film, but it’s still fun and entertaining – so sue me, I actually dig that movie. I then found ‘The Howling’ and its sequels, as well as ‘Wolfen’, ‘Wolf’, and a few others. Sometime later I discovered ‘Ginger Snaps’ and ‘Dog Soldiers’, which opened my mind to an understanding and acceptance of Direct-to-Video films; in my adolescent mind I snubbed anything that wasn’t released in theaters, and yet here I was, falling in love with two fantastic films that did not get theatrical releases. Around this time, I began to study film – the process and the industry itself, and I learned a lot that made me less judgmental. Sometimes filmmakers make due with what they can with the budget they have, and sometimes things just don’t work out as planned. I’m pretty forgiving on the Direct-to-Video features, as long as I can get behind the story, some of the characters, the mythology, and as long as it entertains me.
Since then I’ve seen countless Werewolf films of varying quality, some of which made this list, while others did not. I do want to take note of the fact that there are still several Werewolf films that I have not watched seen yet, based on availability and income, but I will get to them, and I’m sure this forthcoming list will be altered in the future. Ultimately It doesn’t matter though, cause any time I see a Werewolf film available, I’ll buy it and watch it blind – hell, during the holidays, if my girlfriend see’s that there’s a new one out, she’ll just buy it without asking if I want it because she knows of my obsession. I’ll give any of these movies a fair shot, and while there are a ton of shit Werewolf films available, there are also many gems out that that may be over-looked.
