If you’re anything like me, it’s hard to find horror films that you haven’t seen yet, and you end up liking, on Netflix. The fact that I get on Netflix through my blu-ray player where the format is different doesn’t help. In each category I’m only able to see a couple of pages of movies, and that’s it. There’s no option to make more pages appear, to view movies similar to ones you click on or watch trailers directly on the app like there is on my blu-ray player when I get on Amazon Prime. Since none of these things exist on the setup of Netflix I use, I resort to searching the internet for good flicks, but there’s one problem with that. All those lists of good horror movies on Netflix include the same movies. So here I am to tell you about some that I haven’t seen on any list online, and that I think are worth watching.
1) The Den (2013)
Ok, I think I actually did find this on another list online, but that was over a year ago, and only on one website,so…The Den is about a woman named Elizabeth who is conducting a social experiment on a webcam chat site when she witnesses a murder and then becomes an interest of the killer. The movie is kind of a “found footage” movie, but calling it that just feels weird since most of it is like you are looking through the webcam of a laptop, much like Unfriended. With that being said, you should definitely watch it on your laptop, to make for a more eerie feeling. I thought the ending of this movie went in a kind of weird and random direction, but it didn’t ruin it for me. I still really enjoyed it overall.

2) Final Girl (2015)
Tyler Shields makes his directorial debut with the movie Final Girl, about a girl who has been trained to kill, and her target is a group of boys who take unsuspecting girls to the woods to hang out, but instead make them run for their lives while the boys hunt them. The boys think that the girl is their target, but she soon proves them wrong, and is determined to be their final girl. I discovered this film by already following the director, Tyler Shields, who is also a famed photographer who has worked with many of my favorite stars, and the lead actress, Abigail Breslin (Zombieland, Scream Queens) on their social medias where they promoted the movie. I was already a fan of Abigail Breslin, and her co-stars Wes Bentley (American Beauty,The Hunger Games, American Horror Story: Hotel), and Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games, Vikings), but the other actors in the film did a phenomenal job as well. Danny, who is played by Logan Huffman, was probably my favorite character because of how quirky he is. Each of the four boys who hunt girls has a different personality, but all of them produce a Billy Loomis,or Patrick Bateman like persona, and maybe that’s why I love this movie so much. As a final note, I’ll mention that the night I watched Final Girl, I had a dream that Alexander Ludwig was trying to kill me.

3) Circle (2015)
I came across Circle while watching movie trailers on www.IMDB.com for fun,ha. Circle is about a group of 50 strangers who find themselves in a circle in a room. They can’t escape because if they stop off of their designated spot they will die. They soon discover that only one of them will make it out alive, and they have to choose who that one person is. This movie is really unique. It does seem to be very political which I was not expecting, mainly because I didn’t know what to expect at all. Seriously, I was very skeptical about how they had enough content to make an hour and 27 minute long movie, but surprisingly it worked. The ending is very predictable, but I still liked it.

4) The Sacrament (2013)
I found The Sacrament through netflix. At first I thought it was a movie that was being promoted at a horror convention I went to a few years ago, but that ended up being a different movie with the same name, so once I found out it was the wrong movie, I watched the trailer for this one and thought it looked good, and decided to give it a shot. The Sacrament is a found footage film, based on the real life settlement of Jonestown, about a group of journalists who decide to visit one of their co-worker’s sister in her new “paradise” of a home, when they find out things there aren’t as perfect as they seem. This film shares its director Ti West, and star AJ Bowen with 2009 hit, The House of the Devil, and is just as great.

5) Kristy (2014)
Similar to The Sacrament, the first time I heard about this film was by browsing netflix. I watched the trailer, thought it looked good, and watched the movie soon after. Kristy is about a girl named Justine who decides to stay on her college campus alone over the holidays. She runs into a strange and creepy girl at the gas station. With the help of a few others the girl then starts to stalk Justine around campus, with their end goal being to kill her. What I like about this film was that Justine was actually smart,and tried to fight back and not just run away, kind of like Sharni Vinson’s character in You’re Next, but not quite on her level. Also, I thought the ending/group of killers’ motive was very cool and unique.

6) Creep (2015)
Once again, I found this movie by watching trailers on www.IMDB.com and had it on my watchlist for a long while before finally seeing it. Creep did not disappoint. Yet another found footage film on this list (I didn’t realize how many were until now ha), this time about a man who has been hired to film another man’s life,and routine for the day. Mark Duplass plays the man who hired the cameraman, aka the title character, and is incredibly convincing in his role.

7) Would You Rather (2012)
I don’t remember how I found Would You Rather because it’s been two years since I first watched it. Would You Rather stars Brittany Snow as a woman who goes to a dinner party to compete in a deadly game of Would You Rather to raise money for her sick brother. Each of the other guests have similar reasons for being there. I LOVE this movie!!! It’s kind of like a mix of the Saw movies and parts of The Purge: Anarchy. Would You Rather is very unique and has become one of my favorite horror movies.

8)Hush (2016)
Hush was just released on Netflix and is already gaining a lot of attention. Because of this I was considering leaving it off of this list, but I just couldn’t. As someone who is very interested in deaf culture and hopes to become fluent in American Sign Language one day, I’m always excited to find films with deaf characters, and the fact that there is a horror one is awesome. Hush is about a deaf woman named Maddie who finds herself being stalked by a killer in her own secluded home in the woods. The plot is very similar to that of The Strangers, but the fact that Maddie is deaf presents a whole new exciting chain of elements, and factors to the story. John Gallagher Jr who I previously watched in the amazing Short Term 12, is unrecognizable and does a great job as the killer. This film is definitely one that, for me, lived up to the hype!
