So, I saw the headline on the Bloody-Disgusting facebook page and assumed they actually had the answer to this question. But I was wrong when I looked at their actual website. There is no answer to this question. Everything is up in the air. Here is a quote from producer, Christa Campbell’s twitter:
“I loved this film and I’m very proud,” Campbell tweeted. “Unfortunately because of the time it took to release it we lost the rights sadly… so no .. not from us at least.”
So, here we are again, another horror film franchise’s rights are up in the air. This has been the bane of Friday the 13th, Hellraiser and Halloween as well. Of course Halloween is being put out in 2018 from Blumhouse. Well, there is the answer right there, right?
While I am a fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and at least four or five of the movies, why it is we can find a production company to make more of these and not more important horror franchises, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street cannot get made or find a home. This s getting to be a joke. Since 1974 there have been 8 “Chainsaw” films, of course there are big gaps between each film, 1974, 1986, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2006, 2013 and 2017.
I do think if we want to see the series continue, there has to be a direction going forward. Someone has to come up with a plan, one that is not a one shot deal. These films have an ability to have sequels and many of them. So far the timelines are all kinds of messed up. I believe the first two movies are in the same timeline, then Leatherface (1990) is somewhat on its own or followed by The Next Generation. The remake from 2003 has a prequel and then we have Texas Chainsaw 3D and Leatherface. Texas Chainsaw is a sequel to the original film and Leatherface takes place prior to the 1974 events of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Back to my point, how about a proposed trilogy, a beginning, middle and end. It would be a remake trilogy that stands on its own. No origin story, just remake the original movie, but make it different. Or the other option, leave this franchise alone.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a top 10 of all-time. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is amazing, even Leatherface (1990) is very good. But beyond those three, eh. I mean there are people who love the remake and its prequel. But they are not for me. I Would mostly just say, lets give the series a break. Four films in 14 years and not one lives up to the original. We are a mere six years away from its The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s 50th anniversary, lets give it a break and come back fresh in 2024.
As much as I hate the 2007 version of Halloween, you know, Rob Zombie’s movie. I have said it many times, I think Rob Zombie could be the guy to get to make this movie, a remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There are parts of House of 1000 Corpses that reminded me of the original Chainsaw and even with The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween, I can see it. He brings a dark, grittiness and trashy look to his films. This could work so well and I am still confused it hasn’t happened.
Overall, I think it is time to give the franchise a rest, as I said. Leatherface, is no good. I planned to write a review on the movie, but it is just not good, I called it “stupid” IT was a waste of a movie overall. The last four films have not been good, strike that, last five films.
