As you boils and ghouls may already know, October is my favorite time of the year, YES even a bigger time of year than Christmas. So I thought I would do something a little different this month. I’m not really a list ‘guy’, so I usually leave those duties to our benevolent leader Rayzor. But being of French-Canadian descent, I’ve always tried to learn more from my culture. So I figured what better way to learn more than to watch French horror films!
Here’s my list of my Top 10 French Horror Films!!!
10.) Amer (2009)
A Belgian-French thriller horror film written and directed by French duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. The film is a bizarre giallo shown in three developing acts.
9.) The Night Eats the World (2018)
After an all-night raging party, a young man wakes up hungover. Blood-smeared walls and dead bodies litter the hallways and stairwells of the apartment building. It seems he was just woken up to the zombie apocalypse.
8.) Revenge (2017)
Jen and her boyfriend are vacationing at an exotic home, when his friends unexpectedly arrive for a hunting expedition. Jen is then brutalized and horrifically left for dead. Narrowly surviving, Jen then takes on the namesake of the film in full brutal force.
7.) The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears (2013)
When his wife disappears, a man investigates the dark and twisted trails in the halls of his apartment building. Led on a wild goose chase of cryptic messages he finds himself in a hellish nightmare with strange fantasies of sensuality and bloodshed. This is the second film directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani on this list. A brilliant French take on the giallo sub-genre.
6.) Calvaire (2004)
A charming, semi-professional jobbing cabaret singer is traveling through France working in old folks’ homes and community centers. On his way to the next gig, his car breaks down in a run-down village. The wrong village…
5.) Frontier(s) (2007)
A gang of young criminals flee Paris during a revolution, in a bid for freedom, only to find themselves ensnared by a family of Nazi cannibals intent on breeding a new Aryan master race.
4.) Raw (2016)
In one of more shocking and surprising French films in recent years, young vegetarian Justine encounters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world during her first week at veterinary school. The young woman soon experiences terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge.
3.) High Tension (2003)
A beautiful young Frenchwoman, travels out to the country to visit her family and brings along her friend. Soon after they get settled in the secluded home, they are all brutally attacked by a psychotic truck driver. Chaos ensues.
2.) Inside (2007)
A scissor-wielding psychopath terrorizes a pregnant widow on Christmas Eve. ENOUGH SAID!
1.) Martyrs (2008)
Two young women who were both victims of abuse as children embark on a bloody quest for revenge only to find themselves plunged into a living hell of depravity. (Not for those with weak stomachs)
Honorable Mention: Un Chien Andalou (1929)
Co-written by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali, this silent film was made completely according to surrealist principles and includes some of the most searing and memorable images ever filmed.
